Here's the idea behind this pairing. Lab studies suggest calamus can slow down an enzyme called CYP2D6, which your body uses to help clear certain medications. Rucaparib (Rubraca) is an active drug, not a prodrug, so if its breakdown slows, more of it could linger in your system. In theory, that could mean stronger effects and a higher chance of side effects like nausea, fatigue, low blood counts, or changes in liver or kidney lab values.

I want to be straight with you, though: this concern comes only from test-tube research, not from people, so it's quite theoretical. On top of that, calamus carries its own safety worries and is best avoided. Please loop in your oncology team or pharmacist before adding any supplement while on Rubraca.

Calamus is a swamp plant with a long history in Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine, mostly for digestive and nervous-system complaints. However, it contains beta-asarone, a compound linked to cancer and other toxic effects in animal studies, which is why the U.S. FDA banned it from foods. Because of these safety concerns and a lack of solid human evidence, it is generally best avoided.

About Rucaparib

What Is Rucaparib Used For?

Brand name: Rubraca

Rubraca (rucaparib) is used for two types of cancer in adults who carry a harmful BRCA gene mutation (either inherited or found in the tumor). First, it is used as maintenance treatment — meaning ongoing treatment to keep cancer from coming back — in people with recurrent epithelial ovarian cancer, fallopian tube cancer, or primary peritoneal cancer who responded (fully or partially) to platinum-based chemotherapy.

Second, Rubraca treats metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (advanced prostate cancer that has stopped responding to hormone-lowering treatment) in adults who have already received androgen receptor-directed therapy. Patients must be tested with an FDA-approved companion diagnostic to confirm the BRCA mutation before starting Rubraca for prostate cancer.
