Here's the gist with Valsartan (Diovan) and calamus. Valsartan already works to lower your blood pressure by relaxing your blood vessels. In animal studies, calamus seemed to slow the heart down a bit and weaken its beat, which can also nudge blood pressure lower. Stack the two together and, in theory, your pressure could dip more than expected.

If that happened, you might feel dizzy, lightheaded, tired, or woozy when you stand up too fast. I'll be honest though: this concern comes from lab and animal research, not solid human studies, so it's more of a caution than a proven problem. Calamus also has its own safety worries, so before adding it, please run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

Calamus is a swamp plant with a long history in Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine, mostly for digestive and nervous-system complaints. However, it contains beta-asarone, a compound linked to cancer and other toxic effects in animal studies, which is why the U.S. FDA banned it from foods. Because of these safety concerns and a lack of solid human evidence, it is generally best avoided.

About Valsartan

What Is Valsartan Used For?

Brand names: Diovan, Prexxartan

Valsartan treats high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children, heart failure in adults, and reduces the risk of cardiovascular death in adults who have had a heart attack and have a weakened heart muscle. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of stroke and heart attack.

Diovan (valsartan) tablets are approved to treat high blood pressure in children as young as 1 year old. Valsartan tablets (other brands) are approved for children 6 years and older. Valsartan oral solution is specifically indicated for patients with heart failure or post-heart attack left ventricular dysfunction who are unable to swallow tablets.
