Amiloride, Hydrochlorothiazide falls under DIURETIC DRUGS — the group Caraway interacts with.

Theoretically, caraway might increase the risk of hypokalemia when used with diuretics that deplete potassium.
Animal research suggests that a single dose of caraway fruit extract can promote diuresis and increase the urinary excretion of sodium and potassium. However, sub-chronic use of caraway fruit extract does not seem to significantly increase potassium excretion, although urine output continues to be increased for up to 6 days.

Here is the thing to keep in mind with this combo pill. The amiloride part is actually potassium-sparing, meaning it helps hold onto potassium, while the hydrochlorothiazide part tends to push potassium out. They are paired on purpose to balance each other. The concern on file is mostly theoretical: in animal studies, concentrated caraway acted like a mild water pill and nudged sodium and potassium out in the urine, though that effect faded with repeated use.

In real life, the bigger worry would be a little extra fluid loss leading to dizziness, lightheadedness, or feeling drained, rather than a big potassium swing. Cooking with caraway is not a problem. If you are using concentrated caraway oil or capsules, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on your blood pressure and electrolytes.

What Is Amiloride and Hydrochlorothiazide Used For?

Brand names: Moduretic, Amilzide, Moduret 25, Amil-Co

Amiloride hydrochloride and hydrochlorothiazide tablets are used for patients with high blood pressure (hypertension) or congestive heart failure who tend to develop low potassium (hypokalemia) when taking a thiazide or other diuretic alone — or for whom keeping potassium levels in a normal range is especially important, such as people taking digoxin or those with significant heart rhythm problems.

The tablets may be used on their own or alongside other blood pressure medicines, such as methyldopa or beta blockers. This combination product is not intended as the first-choice treatment for swelling (edema) or high blood pressure unless low potassium is a specific concern.
