ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS
Why this applies to Aspirin, Butalbital
Aspirin, Butalbital falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Cat's Claw interacts with.
Cat's claw contains rhynchophylline and isorhynchophylline. Animal research suggests that these alkaloids can inhibit platelet aggregation. This interaction has not been reported in humans.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
The product you're asking about (Axotal) combines aspirin with butalbital. The piece that matters here is the aspirin. Aspirin already thins the blood a bit by keeping platelets from clumping together, which is exactly why it helps with pain and clotting. Cat's claw contains compounds (rhynchophylline and isorhynchophylline) that, in lab and animal studies, also seem to slow platelets down. Stack the two and you could, in theory, see more bruising, nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or stomach upset.
I want to be honest about the strength of this: it's only been seen in test tubes and animals, never reported in real people, so consider it a precaution rather than a proven problem. Still, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before adding cat's claw, especially if you bruise easily or take other blood thinners.
