Here's the basic idea: Defibrotide is a powerful clot-preventing medicine given in the hospital to people recovering from a stem-cell transplant who have a serious liver complication. Because it already lowers the body's ability to clot, adding anything else that thins the blood could stack on top of it. Lab and animal studies hint that Chaga may make platelets a little less sticky, which in theory could add to defibrotide's bleeding risk.

I want to be honest about the evidence here, though. This bleeding effect from Chaga has only shown up in test tubes and animals, never in actual people, so it's theoretical. Realistically, anyone on defibrotide is being closely watched in a hospital for signs like easy bruising, nosebleeds, or bleeding gums. Still, mention any supplement, including Chaga tea, to your care team so they can keep you safe.

What Is Defibrotide Injection Used For?

Brand name: Defitelio

Defitelio (defibrotide injection) is used to treat hepatic veno-occlusive disease (VOD) — also called sinusoidal obstruction syndrome (SOS) — in adult and pediatric patients. This is a serious condition where small blood vessels in the liver become blocked, most often after a hematopoietic stem-cell transplant (HSCT).

Defitelio is specifically indicated when VOD is accompanied by kidney dysfunction or pulmonary (lung) dysfunction, making it a treatment for one of the most severe forms of this complication.
