Here's the gist for citalopram (Celexa) and chenopodium oil. This isn't about how your body breaks down citalopram, and citalopram isn't a prodrug, so the oil won't make your antidepressant stronger or weaker. The concern is something simpler: both can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight. Citalopram is on the list of medicines that can occasionally cause photosensitivity, meaning you may sunburn faster or get a rash with sun exposure.

Put them together and that sun-sensitivity risk could add up. To be honest, this is a theoretical caution based on how each behaves, not proven cases, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Still, chenopodium oil is genuinely toxic taken internally, so please check with your pharmacist or doctor before using it at all.

Chenopodium oil is a strong-smelling essential oil from the epazote plant that was historically used to treat intestinal worms. It contains ascaridole, a compound that is quite toxic, and overdoses have caused serious harm, so it is no longer recommended for internal use. Safer modern deworming medicines exist, so talk with a pharmacist or doctor before using this oil.

Brand name: Celexa

Citalopram — available as tablets (including brand Celexa), oral solution, and capsules — is used to treat major depressive disorder (MDD) in adults. This includes depression that causes persistent low mood, loss of interest in everyday activities, changes in sleep or appetite, fatigue, and difficulty concentrating.

Citalopram capsules are specifically indicated for adults with MDD but are not intended for starting or stopping treatment — another citalopram product must be used for dose titration. All forms are indicated for adults only; citalopram tablets are not approved for use in children.
