Here's the gist: hydrochlorothiazide is one of those medicines that can already make your skin a little more sensitive to sunlight, meaning you may sunburn faster than usual. Chenopodium oil from the epazote plant has also been linked to sun sensitivity. Put the two together and, at least on paper, you could end up with an easier or worse sunburn, redness, or a rash on areas that get sun exposure.

I'll be honest, this one is theoretical, based on how these two behave rather than strong studies, so I don't want to alarm you. There's no change in how your water pill works for blood pressure or fluid. Still, chenopodium oil isn't recommended for internal use because of its toxicity. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, and use good sun protection.

Chenopodium oil is a strong-smelling essential oil from the epazote plant that was historically used to treat intestinal worms. It contains ascaridole, a compound that is quite toxic, and overdoses have caused serious harm, so it is no longer recommended for internal use. Safer modern deworming medicines exist, so talk with a pharmacist or doctor before using this oil.

What Is Hydrochlorothiazide Used For?

Brand names: Esidrix, Hydro, Microzide, HydroDiuril, Hydro-D, Oretic, Aquazide H, Aquazide, HCTZ

Hydrochlorothiazide treats high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children, either alone or combined with other blood pressure medicines. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of strokes and heart attacks.

It also treats edema (fluid buildup) linked to congestive heart failure, hepatic cirrhosis (liver scarring), and kidney conditions including nephrotic syndrome. Hydrochlorothiazide tablets are additionally indicated for edema caused by corticosteroid or estrogen therapy, and edema from acute glomerulonephritis or chronic renal failure. Inzirqo (the oral suspension) is specifically approved for both hypertension and edema in adult and pediatric patients.
