Amantadine falls under ANTICHOLINERGIC DRUGS — the group Clubmoss interacts with.

Evidence from in vitro research suggests that clubmoss extract can inhibit acetylcholinesterase activity. Theoretically, concurrent use of anticholinergic drugs and clubmoss might decrease the effectiveness of club moss or the anticholinergic agent. Some anticholinergic drugs include atropine, benztropine (Cogentin), biperiden (Akineton), procyclidine (Kemadrin), and trihexyphenidyl (Artane).

Here's the idea behind this one. Amantadine works partly by acting like an anticholinergic, meaning it dials down a brain chemical called acetylcholine. Clubmoss seems to do the opposite. In lab studies it blocks an enzyme that breaks down acetylcholine, which lets more of it stick around. So in theory, the two could work against each other and clubmoss might blunt some of the benefit you get from amantadine for Parkinson's symptoms or tremor.

I want to be honest about how soft this is. This is based only on test-tube research, not on people, so we really don't know if it matters in real life. Clubmoss also contains alkaloids that can be toxic. Before combining them, please check with your pharmacist or doctor rather than starting or stopping anything on your own.

What Is Amantadine Used For?

Brand names: Symmetrel, Gocovri, Osmolex ER

Amantadine capsules, tablets, and oral solution are used to prevent or treat uncomplicated respiratory illness caused by influenza A virus strains. They are also used in the treatment of parkinsonism and drug-induced extrapyramidal reactions (movement problems caused by certain medications).

Gocovri (an extended-release amantadine capsule) has two specific approved uses: treating dyskinesia (uncontrolled, involuntary movements) in people with Parkinson's disease who are taking levodopa-based therapy, and as an add-on treatment to levodopa/carbidopa for people experiencing "off" episodes (periods when Parkinson's symptoms return or worsen).
