Chlorpromazine falls under ANTICHOLINERGIC DRUGS — the group Clubmoss interacts with.

Evidence from in vitro research suggests that clubmoss extract can inhibit acetylcholinesterase activity. Theoretically, concurrent use of anticholinergic drugs and clubmoss might decrease the effectiveness of club moss or the anticholinergic agent. Some anticholinergic drugs include atropine, benztropine (Cogentin), biperiden (Akineton), procyclidine (Kemadrin), and trihexyphenidyl (Artane).

Here's the basic idea with chlorpromazine (Thorazine) and clubmoss. Chlorpromazine has anticholinergic activity, meaning part of how it works (and part of where its side effects come from) involves blocking the chemical messenger acetylcholine. Lab studies hint that clubmoss may do the opposite by raising acetylcholine levels. So in theory, the two could work against each other, slightly blunting some of chlorpromazine's effects.

I want to be honest about the evidence here: this is based only on test-tube research, not on real people, so it's quite theoretical. Still, since chlorpromazine is a serious medication for serious conditions, I wouldn't add clubmoss without checking first. Please run it by your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

What Is Chlorpromazine Used For?

Brand names: Thorazine, Thorazine Spansules

Chlorpromazine is used to manage psychotic disorders and treat schizophrenia. It also controls nausea and vomiting, relieves restlessness and apprehension before surgery, and controls the manic phase of manic-depressive illness. Other uses include relief of intractable hiccups, treatment of acute intermittent porphyria, and use as an adjunct in tetanus treatment.

In children ages 1 to 12, it is used for severe behavioral problems marked by explosive or combative behavior, and for short-term treatment of hyperactive children with conduct disorders. The oral forms are also approved for the management of manifestations of psychotic disorders broadly, in addition to the uses shared with the injection form.
