Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: cocoa naturally contains a small amount of caffeine, which is a mild stimulant. Your medication includes ephedrine, which is also a stimulant that can speed up your heart and raise blood pressure. Stacking two stimulants together could add up, so in theory you might notice more jitteriness, a faster or pounding heartbeat, trouble sleeping, or feeling on edge.

To be fair, this is based on expert opinion rather than strong studies, and the caffeine in a normal cup of cocoa or a bit of chocolate is pretty small. Concentrated cocoa supplements are more of a concern than an occasional treat. If you have heart or blood pressure issues, check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding cocoa supplements.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Amobarbital, Ephedrine Sulfate page

“Ephedrine & Amytal pairs a barbiturate sedative, amobarbital, with the stimulant ephedrine, so the supplements that interact with it pull in two directions at once, and I would treat this list with genuine care. Ten of the 132 ingredients on file are rated major: alcohol and kava can deepen the sedation toward dangerously slowed breath…”

About Cocoa

What is Cocoa?

Cocoa
  • Heart and blood vessel health
  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • Mental focus and mood
  • Skin moisturizing (cocoa butter)

Cocoa is rich in plant compounds called flavanols that may modestly support blood vessel function and blood pressure, but most chocolate products are high in sugar, fat, and calories, which can offset any benefit. Enjoy cocoa as part of a balanced diet, and talk to your pharmacist before using concentrated cocoa supplements, especially if you have heart or blood pressure conditions.
