Coffee Charcoal and Albendazole

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ORAL DRUGS

Why this applies to Albendazole

Albendazole falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Coffee Charcoal interacts with.

Coffee charcoal can reduce the absorption of orally administered drugs and should be separated from oral drug administration by at least two hours.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Probable Evidence D

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: coffee charcoal works like a sponge in your gut. Because it has that porous, charcoal-like surface, it can grab onto medicines you swallow and keep them from being fully absorbed. If you take albendazole at the same time, some of your dose could get bound up and never make it into your bloodstream, which means less of the drug reaching the worms you're trying to clear.

That matters more here because albendazole already absorbs poorly on its own, and you're treating a serious infection. To stay safe, keep the two apart by at least two hours. This concern is based on how charcoal behaves rather than direct studies, so check the exact timing with your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Albendazole page

“Activated charcoal is the one entry here I would treat as a genuine hazard with albendazole. It soaks up drugs in the gut, and albendazole, an antiparasitic taken for worm and tapeworm infections, is already absorbed poorly to begin with.”

About Coffee Charcoal

What is Coffee Charcoal?

  • Diarrhea
  • Inflammatory bowel conditions
  • Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
  • Mild digestive upset
  • Wound and skin care (topical, traditional)

Coffee charcoal is made by roasting green coffee beans until they turn black, creating a charcoal-like material used traditionally for diarrhea and digestive complaints. Scientific evidence supporting its benefits is very limited, and it should not replace proven treatments. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have a chronic gut condition.

About Albendazole

What Is Albendazole Used For?

Brand name: Albenza

Albendazole tablets — sold under the brand name Albenza as well as generically — are used to treat two specific parasitic infections. Both Albenza (the brand) and generic albendazole tablets are FDA-approved for these same two conditions. Your doctor will determine which form is right for you.
