Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's a little wrinkle worth noting. The interaction on file is really about oral medicines, because charcoal-like materials can grab onto things in your gut and keep them from being absorbed. Iodixanol (Visipaque) doesn't fit that picture. It's a contrast dye given into a vein (or sometimes an artery) during imaging tests like CT scans or angiograms, so it never travels through your stomach and intestines where coffee charcoal does its work.

Because they meet in completely different places in the body, coffee charcoal isn't expected to lower how much iodixanol gets where it needs to go. This caution is theoretical and aimed at swallowed pills. Still, always tell the team doing your scan about any supplements, and check with your pharmacist if you're unsure.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Iodixanol page

“Iodixanol (Visipaque) is the contrast dye injected for CT scans and angiograms, and its list of 23 interacting supplements deserves genuine care rather than a shrug. The lone major entry is activated charcoal, which can lower levels of many drugs even when they are not swallowed, because some medicines cycle back through the gut where…”

About Coffee Charcoal

What is Coffee Charcoal?

  • Diarrhea
  • Inflammatory bowel conditions
  • Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
  • Mild digestive upset
  • Wound and skin care (topical, traditional)

Coffee charcoal is made by roasting green coffee beans until they turn black, creating a charcoal-like material used traditionally for diarrhea and digestive complaints. Scientific evidence supporting its benefits is very limited, and it should not replace proven treatments. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have a chronic gut condition.
