Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing about iopamidol (Isovue): it's a contrast dye used during imaging scans, like CT scans, and it's almost always given through an IV or injected directly where it's needed. That matters because coffee charcoal works by binding to things in your gut, and it can only grab onto medicines you swallow. Since iopamidol usually isn't taken by mouth, charcoal won't have much chance to soak it up.

If you were ever given an oral form of a contrast agent, that's a different story, and you'd want to space the charcoal at least two hours apart. This concern is theoretical, based on how charcoal behaves. When in doubt, run your timing past your pharmacist or doctor.

About Coffee Charcoal

What is Coffee Charcoal?

  • Diarrhea
  • Inflammatory bowel conditions
  • Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
  • Mild digestive upset
  • Wound and skin care (topical, traditional)

Coffee charcoal is made by roasting green coffee beans until they turn black, creating a charcoal-like material used traditionally for diarrhea and digestive complaints. Scientific evidence supporting its benefits is very limited, and it should not replace proven treatments. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have a chronic gut condition.
