Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist with Pipobroman (Vercyte), an older oral chemotherapy pill once used for certain blood disorders. Coffee charcoal acts a bit like activated charcoal, meaning it has a porous surface that can grab onto things sitting in your gut. If you swallow it around the same time as your Pipobroman, it could bind some of the medicine before your body absorbs it, leaving you with less drug than intended and possibly a weaker effect on your treatment.

To be fair, this is a theoretical concern based on how charcoal behaves, not something proven for this exact drug. The simple fix is spacing: keep them at least two hours apart. With a cancer medicine like this, please confirm the timing with your oncologist or pharmacist first.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Pipobroman page

“Pipobroman (Vercyte) is an oral chemotherapy medicine used for blood disorders like polycythemia vera, and with a cancer drug there is no room for a dose that only partly gets in, so this list warrants real attention. All 17 ingredients on file interfere in the same basic way, by changing how the drug is absorbed from the gut.”

About Coffee Charcoal

What is Coffee Charcoal?

  • Diarrhea
  • Inflammatory bowel conditions
  • Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
  • Mild digestive upset
  • Wound and skin care (topical, traditional)

Coffee charcoal is made by roasting green coffee beans until they turn black, creating a charcoal-like material used traditionally for diarrhea and digestive complaints. Scientific evidence supporting its benefits is very limited, and it should not replace proven treatments. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have a chronic gut condition.
