Dandelion and Trovafloxacin

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

QUINOLONE ANTIBIOTICS

Why this applies to Trovafloxacin

Trovafloxacin falls under QUINOLONE ANTIBIOTICS — the group Dandelion interacts with.

Theoretically, dandelion might lower fluoroquinolone levels.
Animal research shows that dandelion reduces absorption of ciprofloxacin and can lower levels by 73%. However, this effect has not been reported in humans.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist for Trovafloxacin, which belongs to the fluoroquinolone family of antibiotics. The concern is that dandelion might bind up some of the antibiotic in your gut and lower how much actually gets absorbed into your body. If less drug gets in, the worry is a weaker punch against the infection you're trying to clear.

I want to be honest about how thin the evidence is, though. This comes from animal studies using a different fluoroquinolone (ciprofloxacin), and it has never been shown to happen in real people. Food amounts of dandelion are very unlikely to matter. If you're using concentrated dandelion supplements, a simple fix is spacing them apart from your antibiotic, but please run that by your pharmacist or doctor first.

About Dandelion

What is Dandelion?

Dandelion
  • Water retention (diuretic)
  • Digestive upset
  • Liver and gallbladder support
  • Mild appetite stimulant
  • Skin conditions

Dandelion is a common plant used in food and traditional medicine, often promoted as a natural 'water pill' and digestive aid. Human evidence for these uses is very limited, so its benefits are not well proven. It is generally considered safe as a food, but talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using concentrated supplements, especially if you have allergies or take other medicines.
