Echinacea + Beclomethasone
Beclomethasone brand names: Beclovent, Vanceril.
Beclomethasone falls into 2 drug categories that Echinacea can interact with; the most serious is rated moderate. Echinacea may induce hepatic CYP3A4 and inhibit intestinal CYP3A4.

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Echinacea interacts with whole categories of medication. Beclomethasone falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Echinacea in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
1 of 2Why this applies to Beclomethasone
Beclomethasone falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Echinacea interacts with.
Several clinical trials have shown that taking echinacea for up to one month does not significantly affect the metabolism of various CYP3A4 substrates, including midazolam, docetaxel, etravirine, lopinavir-ritonavir, and darunavir-ritonavir. However, other clinical research shows that echinacea may increase the clearance of midazolam, suggesting that echinacea might induce CYP3A4. The discrepancy is thought to be due to differing effects of echinacea on intestinal versus hepatic CYP3A4 enzymes. Echinacea appears to induce hepatic CYP3A4 but inhibit intestinal CYP3A4. In some cases, these effects might cancel each other out, but in others, drug levels may be increased or decreased depending on the level of effect at hepatic and intestinal sites. The effect of echinacea on CYP3A4 activity may differ depending on the CYP3A4 substrate.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the good news if you use a beclomethasone inhaler for asthma: this interaction is very unlikely to cause you trouble. On paper, echinacea can nudge the liver enzyme (CYP3A4) that helps clear corticosteroids, but inhaled beclomethasone works mostly right in your airways, with only tiny amounts reaching your bloodstream and liver. So even if echinacea shifts that enzyme a little, there's very little drug in your system for it to affect.
The evidence here is also modest and mixed, with echinacea sometimes speeding things up and sometimes slowing them down. I wouldn't expect changes in your breathing control or steroid side effects. Still, if you plan to take echinacea regularly, mention it to your pharmacist so we can keep an eye on things.

IMMUNOSUPPRESSANTS
2 of 2Beclomethasone also falls under IMMUNOSUPPRESSANTS.
Theoretically, echinacea may interfere with immunosuppressant therapy because of its immunostimulant activity.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the thinking behind this pairing. Echinacea is believed to gently rev up the immune system, while beclomethasone (Beclovent, Vanceril) is an inhaled steroid that works by calming down inflammation and swelling in your airways. On paper, those two pull in opposite directions, so the worry is that echinacea could slightly blunt the steroid's effect.
I want to be honest with you: this concern is mostly theoretical, based on how echinacea behaves in lab studies, not real-world reports. Beclomethasone is also inhaled, so very little reaches the rest of your body. Still, if your asthma feels less controlled (more wheezing, coughing, or chest tightness), don't stop either one on your own. Just check in with your pharmacist or doctor first.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Beclomethasone page
“Most people on beclomethasone (Beclovent, Vanceril) use it daily to keep asthma or nasal allergies quiet, and plenty also take herbal products, which is where this list earns real caution. Of the 202 ingredients on this page, four rate major, and those deserve your attention ahead of everything else.”

About Echinacea
What is Echinacea?
- Common cold
- Flu and respiratory infections
- Immune support
- Sore throat
- Wound and skin care (traditional)
Echinacea is a popular herb taken to help prevent or shorten the common cold, but study results are mixed and the overall benefit appears small at best. It is generally well tolerated for short-term use in most healthy adults, though people with allergies to daisy-family plants and those who are pregnant or breastfeeding should be cautious and talk to a pharmacist or doctor first.
About Beclomethasone Oral Inhalation
What Is Beclomethasone Oral Inhalation Used For?
Brand names: Beclovent, Vanceril
Beclomethasone dipropionate HFA inhalation aerosol (brand: Qvar Redihaler) is used for the ongoing, daily management of asthma in adults and children 5 years of age and older. It is a preventive (maintenance) therapy — not a rescue inhaler — meaning it helps control asthma over time rather than treating sudden symptoms.
Important: Qvar Redihaler is not for the relief of sudden asthma attacks or acute bronchospasm. Always keep a separate fast-acting (rescue) inhaler on hand for those moments.
