Cyclosporine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) INHIBITORS — the group Ergot interacts with.

Ergotamine, a constituent of ergot, is a substrate of cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4). Theoretically, drugs that inhibit CYP3A4 might increase the risk of ergot toxicity. Some of these drugs include amiodarone (Cordarone), clarithromycin (Biaxin), diltiazem (Cardizem), erythromycin (E-mycin, Erythrocin), indinavir (Crixivan), ritonavir (Norvir), saquinavir (Fortovase, Invirase), and many others.

Here's the key thing to understand with this pairing. Cyclosporine slows down an enzyme in your body called CYP3A4, and that same enzyme is what helps break down the ergot alkaloids (like ergotamine). So if you took ergot while on cyclosporine, the ergot could pile up instead of clearing out normally. That raises the risk of ergot toxicity, which can mean cold, numb, or painful hands and feet from blood vessels clamping down, nausea, and in serious cases poor circulation to the limbs.

This is mostly a theoretical, anecdotal concern, so I don't want to alarm you. But honestly, raw ergot is toxic and shouldn't be used as a supplement at all. Please talk with your pharmacist or transplant team before adding anything new.

Ergot is a toxic fungus that grows on rye and contains powerful chemicals (ergot alkaloids) that strongly narrow blood vessels and squeeze the uterus. Because raw ergot is poisonous and the dose is impossible to control safely, it should never be used as a home remedy or supplement. Some purified ergot chemicals are used as prescription drugs under strict medical supervision, but the crude herb is not safe to take.

Cyclosporine is prescribed to help prevent the body from rejecting a transplanted kidney, liver, or heart. It is often used alongside other immunosuppressive medicines as part of a full transplant care plan.

It is also used for adults with severe, active rheumatoid arthritis that hasn't responded well enough to methotrexate, and for adults with severe plaque psoriasis who haven't had success with other standard treatments.
