Paroxetine falls under SEROTONERGIC DRUGS — the group Ergot interacts with.

Certain ergot alkaloids, such as dihydroergotamine, act as serotonin agonists. Theoretically, combining serotonergic drugs with ergot might increase the risk of serotonergic side effects including serotonin syndrome and cerebral vasoconstrictive disorders. Monitor patients for signs of serotonin syndrome and other serotonergic side effects if using ergot with serotonergic drugs.
Serotonergic drugs include the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) such as fluoxetine (Prozac), paroxetine (Paxil), and sertraline (Zoloft); tricyclic and atypical antidepressants such as amitriptyline (Elavil), clomipramine (Anafranil), and imipramine (Tofranil); triptans such as sumatriptan (Imitrex), zolmitriptan (Zomig), and rizatriptan (Maxalt); opioids such as methadone (Dolophine) and tramadol (Ultram); and many other medications.

Here's the basic idea: Paroxetine (Paxil) raises serotonin activity in your body, and certain ergot chemicals act on serotonin receptors too. Stack the two together and you could, in theory, push serotonin signaling too high. That can lead to serotonin syndrome, with symptoms like agitation, a racing heart, sweating, shivering, muscle twitching or stiffness, and confusion. Ergot can also tighten blood vessels on its own, which adds another reason for caution.

I'll be honest with you, this concern rests on weak, anecdotal evidence rather than solid studies, so it's more of a theoretical caution than a proven problem. That said, raw ergot is genuinely toxic and isn't safe as a home remedy regardless. Please don't change your paroxetine, just run any ergot product past your pharmacist or doctor first.

What is Ergot?

Ergot is a toxic fungus that grows on rye and contains powerful chemicals (ergot alkaloids) that strongly narrow blood vessels and squeeze the uterus. Because raw ergot is poisonous and the dose is impossible to control safely, it should never be used as a home remedy or supplement. Some purified ergot chemicals are used as prescription drugs under strict medical supervision, but the crude herb is not safe to take.

What Is Paroxetine Used For?

Brand names: Paxil CR, Paxil, Brisdelle

Paroxetine tablets, film-coated tablets, and oral suspensions are approved in adults for major depressive disorder (MDD), obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The extended-release tablet forms (Paxil CR, paroxetine HCL CR, and paroxetine extended-release tablets) are approved in adults for MDD, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD).

Brisdelle (paroxetine 7.5 mg capsule) and generic paroxetine capsules are approved specifically for moderate to severe vasomotor symptoms (hot flashes) associated with menopause — not for any psychiatric condition. Paroxetine tablets are not approved for use in children.
