Here's the simple version: ergot itself is a powerful blood-vessel tightener, and amphetamine (the active ingredient in Dyanavel XR, Mydayis, and others) also nudges your blood vessels to narrow and bumps up your heart rate and blood pressure. Put the two together and those effects can stack on top of each other. The worry is too much vasoconstriction, meaning blood vessels clamping down more than they should, along with a faster heartbeat or higher blood pressure.

I'll be honest, the evidence here is mostly anecdotal, so this isn't a guaranteed reaction. And realistically, no one should be taking crude ergot at all since it's toxic and impossible to dose safely. If you've been prescribed a medical ergot drug, please loop in your pharmacist or doctor before combining it with amphetamine.

What is Ergot?

Ergot is a toxic fungus that grows on rye and contains powerful chemicals (ergot alkaloids) that strongly narrow blood vessels and squeeze the uterus. Because raw ergot is poisonous and the dose is impossible to control safely, it should never be used as a home remedy or supplement. Some purified ergot chemicals are used as prescription drugs under strict medical supervision, but the crude herb is not safe to take.

What Is Amphetamine Used For?

Brand names: Dyanavel XR, Adensys XR-ODT, Mydayis, Adzenys ER

Amphetamine treats Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in patients 6 years and older. Adzenys XR-ODT, Dyanavel XR, and the amphetamine extended-release orally disintegrating tablet formulations are specifically approved for ADHD in this age group.

Amphetamine Sulfate tablets and Evekeo (amphetamine sulfate tablets) are also approved for narcolepsy (a sleep disorder causing uncontrollable daytime sleepiness) and as a short-term aid in a calorie-restricted weight-loss program for exogenous obesity (weight gain from external factors like overeating) in patients who have not responded to other approaches.
