Here's the concern with this pairing. Diethylpropion is a stimulant that works much like an amphetamine, and one of its effects is to tighten up your blood vessels and bump up your heart rate and blood pressure. Ergot does something similar on its own, since the ergot alkaloids are powerful blood vessel constrictors. Put the two together and those squeezing effects can stack up.

In real terms, that could mean higher blood pressure, a racing or pounding heart, headache, or in rare cases poor circulation to your hands and feet. I'll be honest, the evidence here is mostly anecdotal rather than strong studies. Still, crude ergot is genuinely toxic and isn't safe as a supplement anyway. Please talk with your pharmacist or doctor before combining anything like this.

Ergot is a toxic fungus that grows on rye and contains powerful chemicals (ergot alkaloids) that strongly narrow blood vessels and squeeze the uterus. Because raw ergot is poisonous and the dose is impossible to control safely, it should never be used as a home remedy or supplement. Some purified ergot chemicals are used as prescription drugs under strict medical supervision, but the crude herb is not safe to take.

What Is Diethylpropion Used For?

Brand names: Radtue, Tenuate, Durad, Tenuate Dosepan

Diethylpropion is used to help manage exogenous obesity (excess body weight from outside factors like diet) in adults with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher who haven't lost enough weight through diet and exercise alone. It is meant to be used for only a few weeks as part of a calorie-restricted diet plan.

All available tablet products — both the immediate-release tablets and the extended-release tablets — are approved for this purpose. Each is approved for use as a single medication only; combining diethylpropion with any other weight-loss drug is not allowed.
