Lanreotide falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) INHIBITORS — the group Ergot interacts with.

Ergotamine, a constituent of ergot, is a substrate of cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4). Theoretically, drugs that inhibit CYP3A4 might increase the risk of ergot toxicity. Some of these drugs include amiodarone (Cordarone), clarithromycin (Biaxin), diltiazem (Cardizem), erythromycin (E-mycin, Erythrocin), indinavir (Crixivan), ritonavir (Norvir), saquinavir (Fortovase, Invirase), and many others.

First, a big-picture safety note: raw ergot should never be used as a home supplement because it is genuinely poisonous and the dose can't be controlled. So this is really a question about whether lanreotide makes ergot riskier, and the honest answer is that the concern here is pretty weak.

The interaction on file is about drugs that block the liver enzyme CYP3A4, which can slow how ergot is cleared and theoretically push toward ergot toxicity (think severe blood vessel narrowing, cold or painful hands and feet, headache). But lanreotide isn't really a CYP3A4 inhibitor in any meaningful way, and this warning is based on anecdotal, theoretical evidence. The far bigger issue is the ergot itself. Please don't take crude ergot at all, and check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining anything new with lanreotide.

Ergot is a toxic fungus that grows on rye and contains powerful chemicals (ergot alkaloids) that strongly narrow blood vessels and squeeze the uterus. Because raw ergot is poisonous and the dose is impossible to control safely, it should never be used as a home remedy or supplement. Some purified ergot chemicals are used as prescription drugs under strict medical supervision, but the crude herb is not safe to take.

About Lanreotide Injection

What Is Lanreotide Injection Used For?

Brand name: Somatuline

Lanreotide Injection is used for the long-term treatment of acromegaly (a condition where the body produces too much growth hormone) in patients who have not responded adequately to surgery or radiation, or who cannot have those treatments. The goal is to bring growth hormone and IGF-1 levels back to normal.

It is also used to treat adults with unresectable, well- or moderately-differentiated, locally advanced or metastatic gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (GEP-NETs) to help slow tumor progression, and to treat adults with carcinoid syndrome, where it reduces how often short-acting rescue medications are needed. If a patient is already receiving Lanreotide Injection for GEP-NETs, no additional dose is given for carcinoid syndrome.
