Here's the simple version: both ergot and pseudoephedrine (Sudafed) tighten and narrow your blood vessels. Pseudoephedrine does this in your nasal passages to clear congestion, but it can also nudge up your blood pressure and heart rate. Ergot squeezes blood vessels even harder throughout the body. Put the two together and you may be stacking two vessel-tightening effects on top of each other.

What that could feel like is higher blood pressure, a pounding or racing heart, headache, or cold, tingly fingers and toes from reduced circulation. To be honest, this warning rests on anecdotal reports, not strong studies, and crude ergot really shouldn't be taken anyway. Still, if you use any ergot product, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before reaching for a decongestant.

What is Ergot?

Ergot is a toxic fungus that grows on rye and contains powerful chemicals (ergot alkaloids) that strongly narrow blood vessels and squeeze the uterus. Because raw ergot is poisonous and the dose is impossible to control safely, it should never be used as a home remedy or supplement. Some purified ergot chemicals are used as prescription drugs under strict medical supervision, but the crude herb is not safe to take.

What Is Pseudoephedrine Used For?

Brand names: Pseudoval Plus, Sudafed, Mini Pseudo, Robidrine, Sudafed 12 Hour

Pseudoephedrine temporarily relieves nasal congestion and sinus pressure caused by the common cold, hay fever, or other upper respiratory allergies. Most products also relieve sinus congestion and pressure, and help restore easier breathing through the nose.

Children's Sudafed oral solution additionally promotes nasal and/or sinus drainage. The Nasal Decongestant tablet specifically notes that it temporarily restores freer breathing through the nose.
