Here's the thing about ergot: those natural ergot alkaloids are powerful blood vessel tighteners. Nicotine, whether from a patch, gum, lozenge, inhaler, or nasal spray, also narrows blood vessels and bumps up your heart rate and blood pressure a bit on its own. When you stack two things that both squeeze your blood vessels, those effects can add up. That's the worry here, more vasoconstriction than either one alone.

I'll be honest, this is based on weak, anecdotal evidence rather than strong studies, so I don't want to scare you. Still, raw ergot is genuinely toxic and shouldn't be used as a home remedy at all. If you're using nicotine products and ergot has come up for any reason, please talk it over with your pharmacist or doctor first.

What is Ergot?

Ergot is a toxic fungus that grows on rye and contains powerful chemicals (ergot alkaloids) that strongly narrow blood vessels and squeeze the uterus. Because raw ergot is poisonous and the dose is impossible to control safely, it should never be used as a home remedy or supplement. Some purified ergot chemicals are used as prescription drugs under strict medical supervision, but the crude herb is not safe to take.
