Ritonavir falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) INHIBITORS — the group Ergot interacts with.

Ergotamine, a constituent of ergot, is a substrate of cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4). Theoretically, drugs that inhibit CYP3A4 might increase the risk of ergot toxicity. Some of these drugs include amiodarone (Cordarone), clarithromycin (Biaxin), diltiazem (Cardizem), erythromycin (E-mycin, Erythrocin), indinavir (Crixivan), ritonavir (Norvir), saquinavir (Fortovase, Invirase), and many others.

Here's the key thing with ritonavir (Norvir): it's one of the strongest blockers we have of an enzyme called CYP3A4. That enzyme is exactly what your body uses to break down ergot's active chemicals (like ergotamine). So when ritonavir slows that cleanup, ergot can pile up to dangerous levels.

That matters because ergot already narrows blood vessels powerfully. Too much can cause severe, painful tightening of blood flow to the hands, feet, or other areas (a serious problem called ergotism), along with nausea and headache. This pairing is actually considered one to avoid. The evidence here is mostly theoretical and anecdotal, but the risk is real enough that I'd steer clear. Please don't use crude ergot at all, and check with your pharmacist or doctor.

Ergot is a toxic fungus that grows on rye and contains powerful chemicals (ergot alkaloids) that strongly narrow blood vessels and squeeze the uterus. Because raw ergot is poisonous and the dose is impossible to control safely, it should never be used as a home remedy or supplement. Some purified ergot chemicals are used as prescription drugs under strict medical supervision, but the crude herb is not safe to take.

What Is Ritonavir Used For?

Brand name: Norvir

Ritonavir (brand name Norvir) is used together with other HIV medicines to treat HIV-1 infection in adults and children older than one month of age. It is always taken as part of a combination regimen — never on its own.

Norvir oral powder is specifically indicated for pediatric patients with HIV-1 infection. Norvir tablets and oral solution are indicated for both adults and pediatric patients with HIV-1 infection. Ritonavir tablets (generic) are also indicated for the treatment of HIV-1 infection in combination with other antiretroviral agents.
