Clozapine falls under SEROTONERGIC DRUGS — the group Ergot interacts with.

Certain ergot alkaloids, such as dihydroergotamine, act as serotonin agonists. Theoretically, combining serotonergic drugs with ergot might increase the risk of serotonergic side effects including serotonin syndrome and cerebral vasoconstrictive disorders. Monitor patients for signs of serotonin syndrome and other serotonergic side effects if using ergot with serotonergic drugs.
Serotonergic drugs include the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) such as fluoxetine (Prozac), paroxetine (Paxil), and sertraline (Zoloft); tricyclic and atypical antidepressants such as amitriptyline (Elavil), clomipramine (Anafranil), and imipramine (Tofranil); triptans such as sumatriptan (Imitrex), zolmitriptan (Zomig), and rizatriptan (Maxalt); opioids such as methadone (Dolophine) and tramadol (Ultram); and many other medications.

Here's the gist for clozapine: it nudges serotonin signaling in the brain, and the natural chemicals in ergot (the ergot alkaloids) can act on some of those same serotonin pathways. When you stack two serotonin-active things together, there's a theoretical chance of too much serotonin activity. That can show up as agitation, a racing heart, sweating, shivering, muscle twitching, or confusion (what we call serotonin syndrome). Ergot can also tighten blood vessels, which adds its own risk.

I want to be honest about the evidence here: this is mostly theoretical and based on scattered reports, not strong studies. On top of that, raw ergot is genuinely toxic and shouldn't be used as a home remedy at all. Please don't change your clozapine, and check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding anything new.

Ergot is a toxic fungus that grows on rye and contains powerful chemicals (ergot alkaloids) that strongly narrow blood vessels and squeeze the uterus. Because raw ergot is poisonous and the dose is impossible to control safely, it should never be used as a home remedy or supplement. Some purified ergot chemicals are used as prescription drugs under strict medical supervision, but the crude herb is not safe to take.

What Is Clozapine Used For?

Clozapine is used for two specific situations. First, it is prescribed for people with severe schizophrenia who have already tried other antipsychotic medications and have not gotten adequate relief. It is reserved for this group because of its serious risks.

Second, clozapine is used to lower the chances of repeated suicidal behavior in people with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder who are considered to be at ongoing, chronic risk. It is not a first-choice medication — it is used when the need is serious and other options have fallen short.
