Telaprevir falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) INHIBITORS — the group Ergot interacts with.

Ergotamine, a constituent of ergot, is a substrate of cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4). Theoretically, drugs that inhibit CYP3A4 might increase the risk of ergot toxicity. Some of these drugs include amiodarone (Cordarone), clarithromycin (Biaxin), diltiazem (Cardizem), erythromycin (E-mycin, Erythrocin), indinavir (Crixivan), ritonavir (Norvir), saquinavir (Fortovase, Invirase), and many others.

Here's the simple version: your body clears ergot using a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. Telaprevir is a strong blocker of that same enzyme. So if you took ergot while on telaprevir, the ergot could pile up in your system instead of being broken down normally. That matters because ergot is already toxic and powerful, and higher levels raise the risk of ergot toxicity, things like severe blood vessel narrowing with cold, numb, or painful hands and feet, headache, nausea, and in bad cases tissue damage.

The good news: this is based on weak, anecdotal evidence and is theoretical. But ergot isn't safe as a home remedy anyway. Please don't take any ergot product without first checking with your pharmacist or doctor.

What is Ergot?

Ergot is a toxic fungus that grows on rye and contains powerful chemicals (ergot alkaloids) that strongly narrow blood vessels and squeeze the uterus. Because raw ergot is poisonous and the dose is impossible to control safely, it should never be used as a home remedy or supplement. Some purified ergot chemicals are used as prescription drugs under strict medical supervision, but the crude herb is not safe to take.

About Telaprevir

What Is Telaprevir Used For?

Brand name: Incivek

  • Telaprevir is used along with two other medications (ribavirin [Copegus, Rebetol] and peginterferon alfa [Pegasys]) to treat chronic hepatitis C (an ongoing viral infection that damages the liver) in people who have not yet been treated for this condition or whose condition could not successfully be treated with ribavirin and peginterferon alfa alone. Telaprevir is in a class of medications called protease inhibitors. It works by decreasing the amount of hepatitis C virus (HCV) in the body. Telaprevir may not prevent the spread of hepatitis C to other people.
