This combination product contains two decongestants, phenylephrine and phenylpropanolamine, which work by tightening blood vessels to dry up a stuffy nose. Ergot also strongly narrows blood vessels. Putting them together means you have two things pushing in the same direction, and that can add up to too much squeezing of your blood vessels.

In real life, that could show up as a noticeable rise in blood pressure, a pounding headache, cold or tingly hands and feet, or anxiety and a racing feeling. The evidence here is mostly anecdotal, so it is not a guaranteed reaction, but it is a sensible one to avoid. Keep in mind ergot is genuinely toxic and should not be used as a home remedy at all. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining these.

What is Ergot?

Ergot is a toxic fungus that grows on rye and contains powerful chemicals (ergot alkaloids) that strongly narrow blood vessels and squeeze the uterus. Because raw ergot is poisonous and the dose is impossible to control safely, it should never be used as a home remedy or supplement. Some purified ergot chemicals are used as prescription drugs under strict medical supervision, but the crude herb is not safe to take.
