STIMULANT DRUGS
Why this applies to Caffeine , Sodium Benzoate
Caffeine , Sodium Benzoate falls under STIMULANT DRUGS — the group Ergot interacts with.
Some stimulant drugs include albuterol (Proventil, Ventolin), diethylpropion (Tenuate), dopamine, epinephrine, phentermine (Ionamin), pseudoephedrine (Sudafed), and many others.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the thing to know about pairing ergot with caffeine and sodium benzoate. Both ergot and caffeine are stimulants that can tighten up your blood vessels. Caffeine itself is a stimulant (it isn't a prodrug, it works as-is), so when you stack it on top of ergot's strong vessel-narrowing effect, you may add to that squeeze rather than cancel it out.
In real life, that could mean things like a racing or pounding heart, higher blood pressure, jitteriness, headache, or cold hands and feet. To be honest, this warning rests on anecdotal reports, so it isn't a strong, proven interaction. Honestly though, raw ergot shouldn't be used as a supplement at all because it's toxic. If you're using any ergot-type medicine, please check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Caffeine , Sodium Benzoate page
“Caffeine and sodium benzoate is itself a stimulant medication, so the supplements most likely to cause trouble are the ones doing the same job. Seven of the 208 ingredients on file rate major, several of them stimulant herbs such as ephedra that can pile extra blood pressure and heart strain onto a drug already revving the nervous system.”

About Ergot
What is Ergot?
- Heavy menstrual or uterine bleeding
- Bleeding after childbirth
- Migraine headaches
- Stimulating uterine contractions
Ergot is a toxic fungus that grows on rye and contains powerful chemicals (ergot alkaloids) that strongly narrow blood vessels and squeeze the uterus. Because raw ergot is poisonous and the dose is impossible to control safely, it should never be used as a home remedy or supplement. Some purified ergot chemicals are used as prescription drugs under strict medical supervision, but the crude herb is not safe to take.
