nefazodone falls under SEROTONERGIC DRUGS — the group Ergot interacts with.

Certain ergot alkaloids, such as dihydroergotamine, act as serotonin agonists. Theoretically, combining serotonergic drugs with ergot might increase the risk of serotonergic side effects including serotonin syndrome and cerebral vasoconstrictive disorders. Monitor patients for signs of serotonin syndrome and other serotonergic side effects if using ergot with serotonergic drugs.
Serotonergic drugs include the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) such as fluoxetine (Prozac), paroxetine (Paxil), and sertraline (Zoloft); tricyclic and atypical antidepressants such as amitriptyline (Elavil), clomipramine (Anafranil), and imipramine (Tofranil); triptans such as sumatriptan (Imitrex), zolmitriptan (Zomig), and rizatriptan (Maxalt); opioids such as methadone (Dolophine) and tramadol (Ultram); and many other medications.

Here's the gist for your nefazodone (Serzone). This antidepressant boosts serotonin activity in the brain. Ergot alkaloids can also nudge serotonin receptors, so stacking the two could, in theory, push serotonin signaling too high. That's the worry behind serotonin syndrome: things like agitation, a racing heart, sweating, tremor, muscle twitching, or confusion. Ergot also tightens blood vessels, which adds a separate concern.

Honestly though, this is built on weak, anecdotal reports, so it's a theoretical caution more than a proven danger. The bigger point: raw ergot is toxic and shouldn't be used as a supplement at all. If you've been using any ergot product or a prescription ergot medicine, please loop in your pharmacist or doctor before combining anything.

Ergotamine, a constituent of ergot, is a substrate of cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4). Theoretically, drugs that inhibit CYP3A4 might increase the risk of ergot toxicity. Some of these drugs include amiodarone (Cordarone), clarithromycin (Biaxin), diltiazem (Cardizem), erythromycin (E-mycin, Erythrocin), indinavir (Crixivan), ritonavir (Norvir), saquinavir (Fortovase, Invirase), and many others.

Here's the gist: your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to break down the ergot alkaloids found in ergot. Nefazodone is a strong blocker of that same enzyme. So if the two are taken together, the ergot can't clear out the way it normally would, and its levels can climb higher than expected.

Why that matters: ergot powerfully tightens blood vessels, so a buildup raises the risk of ergot toxicity, things like cold or numb hands and feet, leg cramps, headache, or in serious cases poor circulation. Honestly, raw ergot isn't safe to take on its own anyway, and pairing it with nefazodone only stacks the risk. This is based on limited, theoretical evidence, but please don't combine them without checking with your pharmacist or doctor first.

Ergot is a toxic fungus that grows on rye and contains powerful chemicals (ergot alkaloids) that strongly narrow blood vessels and squeeze the uterus. Because raw ergot is poisonous and the dose is impossible to control safely, it should never be used as a home remedy or supplement. Some purified ergot chemicals are used as prescription drugs under strict medical supervision, but the crude herb is not safe to take.

About Nefazodone

What Is Nefazodone Used For?

Brand name: Serzone

Nefazodone Hydrochloride tablets are approved to treat depression, specifically major depressive disorder (MDD). Clinical trials established its effectiveness over 6 to 8 weeks in outpatients and 6 weeks in hospitalized patients with depression.

Nefazodone has also been shown to help prevent depression from coming back in patients who responded well to initial treatment. Because of a serious risk of liver failure, prescribers are advised to consider other antidepressants before turning to nefazodone.
