Apixaban falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Eucalyptus interacts with.

Theoretically, eucalyptus might increase the levels of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research suggests that eucalyptus oil might inhibit CYP3A4, although this has not been reported in humans.

Here's the short version: your body clears apixaban (Eliquis) partly through a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. Lab studies hint that eucalyptus oil might slow that enzyme down. If that happened in real life, apixaban could build up a little more than expected, and since it's a blood thinner, that means a possibly higher chance of bruising or bleeding (nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or harder-to-stop cuts).

Now the reassuring part: this is only seen in test-tube research, not in actual people, so it's a theoretical concern. Breathing in eucalyptus vapor or using a chest rub is very unlikely to matter. The bigger no-no is swallowing the oil, which is unsafe regardless. Just give your pharmacist a quick heads-up before using concentrated eucalyptus products.

Eucalyptus is best known for its strong-smelling oil used in vapor rubs, inhalants, and lozenges to ease coughs and congestion. It may provide mild, short-term relief of cold symptoms, but the oil is toxic if swallowed and must never be taken by mouth undiluted. About Apixaban

What Is Apixaban Used For?

Brand name: Eliquis

Apixaban is used to reduce the risk of stroke and dangerous clots traveling through the body in adults with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation (an irregular heart rhythm not caused by a heart valve problem). It is also used to prevent deep vein thrombosis (DVT — a blood clot in the leg) in adults after hip or knee replacement surgery, and to treat DVT and pulmonary embolism (PE — a blood clot in the lungs) in adults, including reducing the risk of those clots coming back.

Eliquis (the brand-name tablet and kit) is additionally approved to treat venous thromboembolism (VTE — blood clots in the veins) and reduce the risk of recurrent VTE in pediatric patients from birth and older, after at least 5 days of initial anticoagulant treatment. The generic apixaban tablet carries the adult indications only.
