These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
European Barberry interacts with whole categories of medication. Alprazolam falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with European Barberry in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
CNS DEPRESSANTS
1 of 2Why this applies to Alprazolam
Alprazolam falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group European Barberry interacts with.
Animal research suggests that berberine, a constituent of European barberry, might have sedative effects. Theoretically, European barberry might have a similar effect.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist: Xanax (alprazolam) already calms the brain down, and it can make you drowsy, foggy, or lightheaded on its own. European barberry contains berberine, and in animal studies berberine seemed to have its own mild sedating effect. So the worry is simple addition. Put them together and you might feel more sleepy, slower to react, or unsteady on your feet than you'd expect from your usual dose.
I want to be honest about the strength of this, though. It's a theoretical concern based mostly on lab and animal work, not on solid human studies, so it isn't a major alarm. Still, if you drive, operate machinery, or feel extra groggy, that's worth noticing. Before pairing them, run it by your pharmacist or doctor.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
2 of 2Alprazolam also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.
There is very preliminary evidence suggesting that berberine, a constituent of European barberry, might inhibit the CYP3A4 enzyme. Theoretically, European barberry might have a similar effect.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to clear alprazolam (Xanax) out of your system. The berberine in European barberry may slow that enzyme down a bit. If that happens, your Xanax could hang around longer than usual and build up, making its effects feel stronger.
In practical terms, that might mean more drowsiness, dizziness, trouble concentrating, or feeling unsteady on your feet. I'll be honest with you though: this concern is theoretical, based mostly on early lab hints rather than real patient reports. Food amounts of barberry berries are unlikely to matter, but concentrated berberine supplements are the bigger question mark. Please run it by your pharmacist or doctor before combining the two.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Alprazolam page
“Sedation stacking is the core danger with alprazolam (Xanax), a benzodiazepine for anxiety and panic, and this list deserves genuine care rather than a quick skim. Dozens of entries, alcohol chief among them, deepen its drowsiness and can slow breathing, while an even larger group changes how the body clears the drug through the CYP3A4…”

About European Barberry
What is European Barberry?
- Digestive upset
- Antimicrobial support
- Blood sugar support
- Cholesterol and metabolic support
- Skin conditions
European barberry is a shrub whose root, bark, and berries contain berberine, a bitter plant alkaloid that has been studied mostly in isolated form. Some early research on berberine is promising for blood sugar and cholesterol, but high-quality evidence for the whole barberry herb is limited. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, and avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
About Alprazolam
What Is Alprazolam Used For?
Brand names: Xanax, Niravam
