European Barberry and Aspirin, Codeine Phosphate, Methocarbamol

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

European Barberry interacts with whole categories of medication. Aspirin, Codeine Phosphate, Methocarbamol falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with European Barberry in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

Moderate

CNS DEPRESSANTS

Why this applies to Aspirin, Codeine Phosphate, Methocarbamol

Aspirin, Codeine Phosphate, Methocarbamol falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group European Barberry interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use with drugs that have sedative properties may cause additive effects.
Animal research suggests that berberine, a constituent of European barberry, might have sedative effects. Theoretically, European barberry might have a similar effect.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Here's the thing to keep in mind with this combo pill. Two of its ingredients, codeine and methocarbamol, already calm down your nervous system. Codeine is an opioid pain reliever, and methocarbamol is a muscle relaxer, so together they can make you drowsy, foggy, or lightheaded on their own. European barberry contains berberine, which in animal studies seemed to have a mild calming, sedative effect.

So the worry is simply additive sleepiness. Stacking barberry on top could, in theory, leave you more groggy, slow your reactions, or affect your balance and driving. I'll be honest, this is a theoretical concern based on lab work, not strong human proof. Still, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Aspirin, Codeine Phosphate, Methocarbamol also falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS.

Theoretically, European barberry may increase the risk of bleeding if used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
In vitro and animal evidence suggest that berberine, a constituent of European barberry, might inhibit platelet aggregation. Theoretically, European barberry might have a similar effect.

The piece of this combo product that matters most here is the aspirin. Aspirin is already a blood thinner that keeps platelets from clumping together. Lab and animal studies hint that berberine, the main alkaloid in European barberry, may also make platelets a little less sticky. So the concern is simple addition: stacking barberry on top of your aspirin could nudge your bleeding risk up a bit.

In real life that might look like easier bruising, nosebleeds, gums that bleed when you brush, or cuts that take longer to stop. I want to be honest though, this is a theoretical worry based on early research, not strong human studies. A bite of barberry jam is unlikely to do much, while concentrated berberine capsules are the bigger question. Please run it by your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Aspirin, Codeine Phosphate, Methocarbamol page

“Alcohol is the single riskiest thing to combine with Robaxisal C (aspirin, codeine phosphate, and methocarbamol). Beer and wine both carry major ratings backed by solid human evidence, because codeine and methocarbamol already slow breathing and reflexes, and alcohol deepens that sedation.”

About European Barberry

What is European Barberry?

European Barberry
  • Digestive upset
  • Antimicrobial support
  • Blood sugar support
  • Cholesterol and metabolic support
  • Skin conditions

European barberry is a shrub whose root, bark, and berries contain berberine, a bitter plant alkaloid that has been studied mostly in isolated form. Some early research on berberine is promising for blood sugar and cholesterol, but high-quality evidence for the whole barberry herb is limited. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, and avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
