Here's the gist: gabapentin already tends to make people feel drowsy, foggy, or unsteady on their feet. European barberry contains berberine, which in animal studies seemed to have a mild calming, sedative-like effect. So the worry is simple addition. Put the two together and you might feel sleepier or dizzier than gabapentin alone would make you.

I want to be honest about the strength of this, though. This is a theoretical concern based on lab and animal work, not on real cases in people. Gabapentin isn't a prodrug, so the barberry isn't changing how your body activates or clears it. If you use both, just go easy at first and watch how you feel before driving. Please run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

European barberry is a shrub whose root, bark, and berries contain berberine, a bitter plant alkaloid that has been studied mostly in isolated form. Some early research on berberine is promising for blood sugar and cholesterol, but high-quality evidence for the whole barberry herb is limited. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, and avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

About Gabapentin

What Is Gabapentin Used For?

Brand names: Neurontin, Gralise

Gabapentin (brands include Neurontin, Relgaabi, Gabarone, Gralise, and Horizant) is primarily used to manage postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) — the nerve pain that lingers after a shingles outbreak — in adults. Neurontin, Relgaabi, Gabarone, and gabapentin capsules, tablets, and oral solution are also used as add-on therapy for partial onset seizures (a type of epilepsy) in adults and children aged 3 and older.

Horizant (gabapentin enacarbil extended-release tablet) has two specific approvals: treatment of moderate-to-severe primary restless legs syndrome (RLS) in adults, and management of postherpetic neuralgia in adults. Horizant is not recommended for people who need to sleep during the day and stay awake at night. Gralise is approved only for postherpetic neuralgia and cannot be substituted for other gabapentin products due to its different release profile.
