Hexobarbital is an older barbiturate that calms the brain and was used mainly as a sleep aid and for sedation. It is not a prodrug, so it works directly to slow down your nervous system. The concern here is simple: both this medicine and European barberry may push in the same sleepy direction, so stacking them could add up.

In plain terms, you could feel more drowsy, foggy, or unsteady than expected, with slower breathing in heavier cases. That said, this is a theoretical caution. It comes from animal studies on berberine (barberry's main compound), not from people, so real-world risk is uncertain. Still, since barbiturates are potent, I'd run any barberry supplement past your pharmacist or doctor first before combining them.
