Methantheline (Banthine) is an anticholinergic medicine, meaning it works by blocking acetylcholine to calm muscle spasms in the gut and bladder. The catch is that this same blocking action causes the classic anticholinergic side effects: dry mouth, blurry vision, constipation, trouble urinating, and a faster heartbeat.

Here's where European barberry comes in. Lab (test tube) studies hint that barberry may have mild anticholinergic activity of its own. So in theory, stacking the two could add up and push those drying side effects a little harder. I want to be honest, though: this is a theoretical concern based on cell studies, not real-world reports, so it may not amount to much. Still, since methantheline already leans this way, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.
