Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS
Why this applies to Diphenhydramine Hydrochloride, Naproxen Sodium
Diphenhydramine Hydrochloride, Naproxen Sodium falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Fennel interacts with.
Animal research suggests that fennel oil has antithrombotic and antiplatelet effects.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Aleve PM pairs naproxen, an anti-inflammatory pain reliever, with diphenhydramine, an antihistamine that helps you sleep. The part that matters here is the naproxen. Like other NSAIDs, naproxen can already make it a little easier to bleed and bruise, since it affects how your platelets stick together. The concern on file is that fennel, in lab and animal studies, also seems to slow platelets and clotting slightly. So in theory, stacking the two could nudge your bleeding risk up a bit.
Keep in mind this is theoretical and based only on animal research, so it's not a strong worry. Fennel used as a food or spice is very unlikely to matter. Concentrated fennel supplements or the essential oil are where I'd be more careful, especially if you notice easy bruising, nosebleeds, or stomach upset. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.
