Why this applies to Dapagliflozin

Dapagliflozin falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Glucomannan interacts with.

Theoretically, glucomannan may decrease absorption of drugs taken orally.
Due to its viscosity and bulking effects, there is concern that glucomannan can decrease the absorption of oral drugs. A small clinical study in healthy volunteers shows that taking glyburide 2.5 mg plus glucomannan 3.9 grams with breakfast reduces plasma levels of glyburide when compared with breakfast and glyburide alone. In addition, animal research demonstrates this effect on amoxicillin, but shows increased absorption of metronidazole. This mouse model also demonstrates that metronidazole elimination is prolonged, but amoxicillin elimination is enhanced by 38%; glucomannan may also affect the distribution of some drugs. To avoid changes in absorption, take glucomannan 30-60 minutes after taking oral drugs.

Here's the simple version. Glucomannan is a soluble fiber that turns into a thick gel in your gut. That gel can physically trap pills sitting nearby and slow how much of them your body soaks up. So the worry with Farxiga (dapagliflozin) is that taking it at the same time as glucomannan might reduce how much medicine gets absorbed, which could mean weaker blood sugar control.

This is mostly a theoretical concern, backed by a small study on a different diabetes pill, not on dapagliflozin itself, so I wouldn't panic. The easy fix is timing: take your Farxiga first, then wait about 30 to 60 minutes before your glucomannan. If your blood sugars start creeping up, loop in your pharmacist or doctor.

What Is Dapagliflozin Used For?

Brand name: Farxiga

Dapagliflozin is used for several serious conditions. It helps improve blood sugar control in adults and children aged 10 and older with type 2 diabetes (alongside diet and exercise). It also reduces the risk of hospitalization for heart failure in adults with type 2 diabetes who have established cardiovascular disease or multiple cardiovascular risk factors.

Farxiga (dapagliflozin) is additionally approved to reduce the risk of cardiovascular death, hospitalization, and urgent visits due to heart failure in adults with heart failure — and to slow the progression of chronic kidney disease, including reducing the risk of kidney failure and cardiovascular death, in adults with chronic kidney disease at risk of getting worse.
