Enalapril Maleate falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Glucomannan interacts with.

Theoretically, glucomannan may decrease absorption of drugs taken orally.
Due to its viscosity and bulking effects, there is concern that glucomannan can decrease the absorption of oral drugs. A small clinical study in healthy volunteers shows that taking glyburide 2.5 mg plus glucomannan 3.9 grams with breakfast reduces plasma levels of glyburide when compared with breakfast and glyburide alone. In addition, animal research demonstrates this effect on amoxicillin, but shows increased absorption of metronidazole. This mouse model also demonstrates that metronidazole elimination is prolonged, but amoxicillin elimination is enhanced by 38%; glucomannan may also affect the distribution of some drugs. To avoid changes in absorption, take glucomannan 30-60 minutes after taking oral drugs.

Here's the simple version: glucomannan is a thick soluble fiber that turns into a gel in your gut. That gel can grab onto pills sitting in your stomach and slow or reduce how much of them gets absorbed. With enalapril, the worry is that taking the two at the same time could blunt how much medicine your body takes in, which might mean your blood pressure isn't controlled as well as it should be.

The good news is this is easy to manage with timing. A practical move is to take your enalapril first, then wait about 30 to 60 minutes before your glucomannan dose. The evidence here is modest (mostly seen with other oral drugs, not enalapril specifically), so don't panic, but do run your timing plan past your pharmacist or doctor first.

About Enalapril

What Is Enalapril Used For?

Brand names: Vasotec, Epaned

Enalapril is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children older than one month, and to treat symptomatic heart failure. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of stroke and heart attack.

It is also used for asymptomatic left ventricular dysfunction — when the heart's pumping ability is reduced but the person doesn't yet have obvious heart failure symptoms — to slow the progression to overt heart failure and reduce hospitalizations. Enalapril maleate oral solution (including Epaned) and enalapril maleate tablets (including Vasotec) share these three approved uses.
