Why this applies to Torsemide

Torsemide falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Glucomannan interacts with.

Theoretically, glucomannan may decrease absorption of drugs taken orally.
Due to its viscosity and bulking effects, there is concern that glucomannan can decrease the absorption of oral drugs. A small clinical study in healthy volunteers shows that taking glyburide 2.5 mg plus glucomannan 3.9 grams with breakfast reduces plasma levels of glyburide when compared with breakfast and glyburide alone. In addition, animal research demonstrates this effect on amoxicillin, but shows increased absorption of metronidazole. This mouse model also demonstrates that metronidazole elimination is prolonged, but amoxicillin elimination is enhanced by 38%; glucomannan may also affect the distribution of some drugs. To avoid changes in absorption, take glucomannan 30-60 minutes after taking oral drugs.

Here's the thing with glucomannan: it's a soluble fiber that turns into a thick gel in your gut. That gel can grab onto pills you swallow and slow or reduce how much your body actually absorbs. With torsemide, your water pill, the worry is that less drug gets into your system, so it may not work as well.

In practice, that could mean weaker fluid removal, so you might notice more swelling in your legs, or your blood pressure not being as well controlled. This is mostly a timing problem, not a danger. A simple fix is to take your torsemide first, then wait about 30 to 60 minutes before your glucomannan. Run it by your pharmacist or doctor so they can confirm the best spacing for you.

Glucomannan is a soluble fiber from the konjac root that swells into a gel in your stomach, which may help with mild weight loss, constipation, and modestly lowering cholesterol. What Is Torsemide Used For?

Torsemide tablets are used to treat edema — excess fluid buildup causing swelling — associated with heart failure, renal disease, or hepatic disease. Removing that extra fluid can relieve swelling and make breathing easier.

Torsemide tablets are also used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of serious cardiovascular events, including strokes and heart attacks. It can be used alone or alongside other blood pressure medications.
