Why this applies to Vilazodone

Vilazodone falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Glucomannan interacts with.

Theoretically, glucomannan may decrease absorption of drugs taken orally.
Due to its viscosity and bulking effects, there is concern that glucomannan can decrease the absorption of oral drugs. A small clinical study in healthy volunteers shows that taking glyburide 2.5 mg plus glucomannan 3.9 grams with breakfast reduces plasma levels of glyburide when compared with breakfast and glyburide alone. In addition, animal research demonstrates this effect on amoxicillin, but shows increased absorption of metronidazole. This mouse model also demonstrates that metronidazole elimination is prolonged, but amoxicillin elimination is enhanced by 38%; glucomannan may also affect the distribution of some drugs. To avoid changes in absorption, take glucomannan 30-60 minutes after taking oral drugs.

Here's the practical concern with pairing glucomannan and Vilazodone (Viibryd). Glucomannan isn't broken down by your body. Instead, it soaks up water and forms a thick gel in your gut. That gel can physically wrap around a pill and slow or reduce how much of it gets absorbed into your bloodstream. So the worry here is the opposite of a buildup: you may absorb less of your vilazodone, which could mean it works less well for your depression over time.

The evidence is modest and partly theoretical, drawn from studies on other oral drugs, not vilazodone itself. An easy fix is timing. Many pharmacists suggest taking your vilazodone first, then waiting 30 to 60 minutes before the glucomannan. Vilazodone also works best taken with food, so check with your pharmacist on the smoothest schedule before starting the fiber.
