Here's the situation with Viibryd (vilazodone) and St. John's wort. Your liver clears vilazodone using an enzyme called CYP3A4. St. John's wort revs that enzyme up, so your body can break the medication down faster than it should. The likely result is lower vilazodone levels and a weaker effect, which means your depression symptoms could creep back even though you're taking your pill every day.

There's a second worry too. Both St. John's wort and vilazodone raise serotonin, so combining them can push serotonin too high. Watch for agitation, shakiness, sweating, a racing heart, or confusion. Please don't start, stop, or change anything on your own. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing these two.

Theoretically, St. John's wort might inhibit reuptake and increase levels of serotonin, resulting in additive effects with serotonergic drugs.
Concomitant use of serotonergic drugs with St. John's wort can lead to increased adverse effects and increase the risk of serotonergic side effects, including serotonin syndrome and cerebral vasoconstriction disorders.

Here's the thing to know if you're taking Viibryd (vilazodone) for depression: this medicine already boosts serotonin in your brain, and St. John's wort can nudge serotonin up too. Stacking the two means you may end up with too much of a good thing. The concern is additive serotonin effects, which can show up as jitteriness, restlessness, sweating, shivering, fast heartbeat, muscle twitching, confusion, or stomach upset. In rare cases, very high serotonin can become a serious condition called serotonin syndrome.

I'll be honest, this warning is based on how both work in theory rather than a pile of real-world reports, so it's a caution, not a guarantee. Still, since both push the same chemical, I'd skip combining them and check with your doctor or pharmacist first.

St. John's wort may increase the metabolism and reduce the levels of CYP2C19 substrates.
Preliminary clinical research in healthy males shows that taking St. John's wort for 14 days induces CYP2C19 and increases metabolism of mephenytoin (Mesantoin). In patients with wild-type 2C19 (2C19*1/*1) metabolism was almost 4-fold greater in subjects who received St. John's wort compared to placebo. In contrast, patients with 2C19*2/*2 and *2/*3 genotypes did not demonstrate a similar increase in metabolism. Theoretically, St. John's wort might increase metabolism of other CYP2C19 substrates.

Here's the thing to know about pairing St. John's wort with Vilazodone (Viibryd). St. John's wort can speed up an enzyme in your liver called CYP2C19, which is one of the routes your body uses to clear Vilazodone. When that enzyme runs faster, your Vilazodone may break down quicker and drop to lower levels, which can mean it simply doesn't work as well. You might notice your depression symptoms creeping back.

There's also a second, bigger concern. Both raise serotonin, so taking them together can push serotonin too high (think agitation, racing heart, sweating, shakiness). The metabolism evidence here is limited, but I'd really encourage you to check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining these two.
