Why this applies to Vilazodone

Vilazodone falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES — the group 1,3-dmaa interacts with.

1,3-DMAA strongly inhibits cytochrome P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) enzymes in vitro. Theoretically, 1,3-DMAA can increase levels of CYP2D6 substrates. Some of drugs that are CYP2D6 substrates include amitriptyline (Elavil), clozapine (Clozaril), codeine, desipramine (Norpramin), donepezil (Aricept), fentanyl (Duragesic), flecainide (Tambocor), fluoxetine (Prozac), meperidine (Demerol), methadone (Dolophine), metoprolol (Lopressor, Toprol XL), olanzapine (Zyprexa), ondansetron (Zofran), tramadol (Ultram), trazodone (Desyrel), and others.

Here's the gist for Viibryd (vilazodone): your body partly relies on a liver enzyme called CYP2D6 to clear it. In lab testing, 1,3-DMAA appears to block that enzyme. If it does the same in people, vilazodone could be broken down more slowly and build up in your system, which may mean stronger effects and more side effects like nausea, diarrhea, headache, trouble sleeping, or feeling jittery.

Keep in mind this is based only on test-tube data, so it's more of a theoretical concern than a proven one. That said, DMAA itself is a banned, risky stimulant, and stacking a stimulant on top of an antidepressant is its own worry. I'd steer clear of DMAA and check with your pharmacist or doctor first.
