Here's the simple version: guar gum is a thick, gel-forming fiber, and when it sits in your stomach it can grab onto things you swallow and slow how fast they get absorbed. With alprazolam (Xanax), the concern is that taking the two close together could blunt or slow how much of the dose your body picks up. That might mean your Xanax feels weaker or kicks in more slowly, which isn't what you want when you're treating anxiety or a panic attack.

The good news is this is easy to manage. The usual advice is to space them out, taking your alprazolam first and the guar gum about 30 to 60 minutes later. Food amounts of fiber are unlikely to matter much; this is more about concentrated supplements. Please run your timing past your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

What Is Alprazolam Used For?

Brand names: Xanax, Niravam

Alprazolam treats generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and panic disorder, with or without agoraphobia, in adults. These uses are supported across multiple alprazolam products, including tablets, orally disintegrating tablets, oral solution, and extended-release tablets.

Xanax (tablet) is indicated for the acute treatment of GAD and for panic disorder. Xanax XR (extended-release tablet) and alprazolam extended-release tablets are indicated specifically for panic disorder with or without agoraphobia — not for GAD. Alprazolam orally disintegrating tablets and alprazolam oral solution are indicated for both GAD and panic disorder.
