Here's the gist with Vraylar (cariprazine): because guar gum forms a thick gel in your stomach and gut, it can grab onto pills and slow or lessen how much medicine your body actually absorbs. We've mostly seen this studied with drugs like metformin and penicillin, so for cariprazine specifically it's more of a reasonable concern than a proven problem.

If less cariprazine gets in, you might not get the full benefit, meaning your mood or schizophrenia symptoms could be less well controlled. The easy fix is timing. Taking your guar gum about 30 to 60 minutes after your cariprazine helps them stay out of each other's way. Since cariprazine is a long-acting medicine you take daily, please run this past your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

What Is Cariprazine Used For?

Brand name: Vraylar

Vraylar (cariprazine) is approved to treat schizophrenia in adults and teens 13 and older, and to treat acute manic or mixed episodes associated with bipolar I disorder in adults and children 10 and older. In adults, it is also approved for depressive episodes associated with bipolar I disorder (bipolar depression).

Additionally, Vraylar is approved as an add-on therapy alongside antidepressants for adults with major depressive disorder (MDD) who need extra help beyond their current antidepressant alone.
