Here's the gist for clonidine (Catapres): guar gum is a gel-forming fiber that can grab onto pills in your gut and slow or lessen how much medicine your body actually soaks up. With clonidine, that could mean a little less drug gets absorbed, so your blood pressure control might not be as steady, or your ADHD symptoms (if you take the long-acting form) could creep back.

The good news is this is easy to manage. The simplest fix is timing: take your clonidine first, then wait about 30 to 60 minutes before your guar gum. The evidence here is modest and the effect is usually mild, but since clonidine is something you take consistently, it's worth running your routine by your pharmacist or doctor before you change anything.

What Is Clonidine Used For?

Brand name: Catapres

Clonidine is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). Several products — including Clonidine Hydrochloride tablets, Javadin oral solution, Nexiclon XR extended-release tablets, and Catapres-TTS skin patches — are approved for this use, either alone or combined with other blood pressure medicines.

Extended-release formulations — including Onyda XR oral suspension and clonidine hydrochloride extended-release tablets (such as Kapvay) — are approved to treat ADHD in children and teenagers ages 6 to 17, either on their own or alongside stimulant medications. Separately, clonidine injection products (Duraclon and others) are used alongside opioid pain medicines to treat severe cancer pain that opioids alone cannot control adequately.
