Here's the gist with dronabinol (Marinol or Syndros) and guar gum. Because guar gum is a thick, gel-forming fiber, it can trap or slow the absorption of pills it shares the gut with. Dronabinol is taken by mouth and works after it's absorbed, so if the gel grabs onto it, you may take in a little less of the drug. In plain terms, that could mean it works less well for you, so more nausea, vomiting, or a weaker appetite boost than you'd expect.

The good news is this is easy to manage. A simple fix is spacing them out, generally taking your dronabinol first and waiting 30 to 60 minutes before the guar gum. The evidence here is moderate and based on related oral drugs, so check with your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

What Is Dronabinol Used For?

Brand names: Marinol, Syndros

Dronabinol — available as capsules (Marinol, Dronabinol) and as an oral solution (Syndros, Dronabinol oral solution) — is approved for two conditions in adults. First, it treats anorexia (severely reduced appetite) associated with weight loss in patients with AIDS. Second, it controls nausea and vomiting caused by cancer chemotherapy in patients who have not gotten enough relief from standard anti-nausea treatments.

Both uses apply to all available formulations, but dosing timing and meal instructions differ between the capsule and oral solution products. Always follow the specific instructions for the product you have been prescribed.
