Animal research shows that taking guar gum with ethinyl estradiol decreases ethinyl estradiol absorption. However, this effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the thinking behind this one. NuvaRing releases two hormones, etonogestrel and ethinyl estradiol, that your body absorbs to prevent pregnancy. Because guar gum forms a thick gel in your gut, the worry is that it could grab onto some of the ethinyl estradiol and keep your body from soaking it all up. In theory, less hormone absorbed could mean weaker protection.

I'll be honest with you though, this is a very soft concern. It has only been seen in animal studies and has never actually been reported in people. With the NuvaRing, most of the hormone is also absorbed through the vaginal lining, not the gut, which makes a real-world effect even less likely. Still, if you take concentrated guar gum supplements, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor so they can reassure you or adjust timing.
