Here's the simple version: guar gum is a thick, gel-forming fiber. When you swallow it close to your levocetirizine (Xyzal), that gel can wrap around the tablet and slow or reduce how much of it your gut actually soaks up. With an allergy medicine, that could mean it works less well, so you might notice more sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes, or hives breaking through.

The good news is this is easy to manage. Keeping the two apart usually does the trick, so take your Xyzal first and wait about 30 to 60 minutes before your guar gum. Food-sized amounts of fiber are unlikely to be a big deal, but concentrated supplements are worth spacing out. If you're unsure, your pharmacist can help you set up the timing.

What Is Levocetirizine Used For?

Levocetirizine relieves symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis (hay fever) and perennial allergic rhinitis (year-round indoor allergies) — including runny nose, sneezing, and itchy, watery eyes. It also treats the skin symptoms of chronic idiopathic urticaria (hives with no identified cause) in adults and children as young as 6 months of age.

The oral solution is specifically indicated for perennial allergic rhinitis in children 6 months to 2 years of age, and Xyzal oral solution shares this same use. Tablet forms cover seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis and chronic idiopathic urticaria, though the exact approved age ranges vary by product — always check the labeling for the specific product you are using.
