Here's the simple version: coffee charcoal acts a bit like the activated charcoal you may have heard of. It has a porous surface that can grab onto things in your gut, and that includes your levocetirizine (Xyzal). If the two meet up in your stomach around the same time, the charcoal may soak up some of the medicine before your body can absorb it.

The practical worry is a weaker allergy effect, meaning your runny nose, sneezing, itchy eyes, or hives might not be controlled as well. This is a theoretical concern based on how charcoal behaves, not hard proof. An easy fix is spacing them apart, usually at least two hours. Check with your pharmacist or doctor on timing before changing anything.

What Is Levocetirizine Used For?

Levocetirizine relieves symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis (hay fever) and perennial allergic rhinitis (year-round indoor allergies) — including runny nose, sneezing, and itchy, watery eyes. It also treats the skin symptoms of chronic idiopathic urticaria (hives with no identified cause) in adults and children as young as 6 months of age.

The oral solution is specifically indicated for perennial allergic rhinitis in children 6 months to 2 years of age, and Xyzal oral solution shares this same use. Tablet forms cover seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis and chronic idiopathic urticaria, though the exact approved age ranges vary by product — always check the labeling for the specific product you are using.
