Here's the simple version: guar gum is a thick, gel-forming fiber. When you swallow it, it can grab onto pills sitting in your stomach and gut, which may slow down or lessen how much of your metaxalone (Skelaxin) actually gets absorbed. If less of the drug soaks in, you might not get the full muscle-relaxing, pain-easing relief you're counting on.

This isn't dangerous, and it's not a strong, guaranteed effect. The easy fix is timing: take your metaxalone first, then wait about 30 to 60 minutes before your guar gum supplement. Food amounts of guar gum are unlikely to matter much; concentrated fiber supplements are the bigger concern. If you take both regularly, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

Metaxalone tablets are used to help relieve discomfort caused by acute (short-term), painful musculoskeletal conditions — things like muscle strains, sprains, and similar injuries. It is meant to be used together with rest, physical therapy, and other treatments, not as a stand-alone fix.

This use applies to adults and adolescents 13 years of age and older. Metaxalone tablets are available as the branded product Skelaxin and as a generic.
